Avondale's history starts in the late 19th century, and the birth of this town is related to the name of William "Billy" G. Moore, who arrived in Arizona in the late 1860's, and has settled near the Agua Fria River around 1880. Billy Moore bought land and created there a stage stop, opened a saloon and a general store and named the place "Coldwater Arizona". The name Avondale dates from 1946. If in the beginning
Avondale was only a pit stop for people racing to the "Golden Coast", nowadays it became the top destination for many important racing events such as: the Phoenix International Raceway, the Basha's Supermarket's 200, the Checher Auto Parts 500 and the Subway Fresh 500.Avondale is part of the Maricopa County, and it is situated near the center of the Phoenix-metropolitan area. Avondale is located at 33°26'01? North, 112°20'59? West (33.435322, -112.349758). The city has a total area of 41.3 square miles (107.0 km²), among which the land covers 41.3 square miles (106.9 km²) and the water extends on 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.15%).
Avondale has a population of more than 70,000, that will increase according to the specialists and will reach a level of 123,000 people by the year 2020. In the year 2000 the population density was 869.7 people per square mile (335.8/km²).
